When Bec and i stay in Melbourne we usually pick hotels with price at the top of the list. That means we have a handful of hotels that are in the rotation. On this trip we added a new one. We stayed at Vibe Hotel in the Docklands area of Melbourne. Vibe is an Australian brand so we were keen to see what they had to offer middle aged travellers like us.
The Docklands area borders the Melbourne CBD. It’s a newer part of the city that the local government started developing around 25 years ago. As the name suggests they took an older area that used to be a hub for shipping and tried to turn it into a residential, shopping and entertainment precinct.
It’s close to Marvel Stadium which makes it convenient for people going to sporting events and concerts. From the hotel it’s a 14 minute walk or 3 tram stops. The O’Brien Icehouse is also in Docklands with ice hockey and figure skating events held there throughout the year.

Check in at Vibe Hotel Docklands
Check in at Vibe Hotel Docklands starts at 2pm with check out at 11am. Check in was smooth as no one else was waiting when we arrived. I found the staff at the front desk professional without being overly warm. A little bit stiff is the best way to describe it.
Our room at Vibe Hotel Docklands
We stayed in a standard Guest Room as it was listed on Booking.com. Room 1517 on the 15th floor overlooking The District Docklands and the Melbourne Star. First impressions as Bec and I walked in was that it was a standard hotel room. Clean and well presented with everything you would expect for a $200 a night room in Melbourne. Big bed with white linens, little chair, desk, flat screen TV and nice big dark drapes.
The room had a fairly dark decor which may be the core theme with Vibe because the hallway was quite dark as well. Very modern in its style and approach. Maybe you could say that’s their Vibe.
We were lucky enough to get a high floor and the floor to ceiling window gave us a great view over the area. Especially at night with the Bolte Bridge lit up and the Melbourne Star putting on its light show. Worth knowing that the Melbourne Star has not actually been operating since 2021. It’s currently in a testing phase ahead of reopening and started running the nightly light display at the end of July 2026. So you get the light show from your window even though nobody is riding it yet.
The room had the usual gear. Mini fridge, kettle, tea, coffee, safe, ironing board and iron. Power points on either side of the bed with USB outlets but the one at the desk did not have USB, which is a little strange. We always bring a travel power board with its own USB slots just in case.
The bed was king sized plus and comfortable. A medium feel, not too soft and not too firm. An all rounder that would suit most guests. It came with two pillows. To be honest i was not a fan of the pillows but that’s just me. Not having my pillow from home is something i struggle with a lot.
I tested the wi-fi speed and it was running at 86.6 Mbps. Good enough for watching video and working in the room. The air conditioner was central cooling with an electronic panel that let us drop the room to 18 degrees. Bec and I like a cool room and the aircon did a pretty good job. Not sure how it would cope on a really hot day though.
Those floor to ceiling windows let in a lot of light but the room had a curtain and thick drapes which kept it all out. So if you need a dark hotel room the rooms at Vibe Docklands will suit you.
As for noise, being on the 15th floor eliminated 99% of any traffic or foot noise. The most you could hear was the occasional person in the hallway.
The bathroom at Vibe Hotel Docklands
The bathroom had no amenities or toilet condiments as i call them. No small bottles of hand wash, body wash, shampoo, no toothbrush, toothpaste, shaving kit or vanity kit. Nothing like that at all.
In the shower there were two shower heads, a handheld and a rainfall. Funnily enough they both ran at the same time and for the life of us we could not figure out how to turn one off. Not sure if we were showing our age there or it’s just a quirk with the showers at Vibe. Water temperature was really consistent though. There is nothing worse than a shower you have to keep adjusting.
For ladies planning a night out in Melbourne there’s a small movable make up mirror with a light. And here’s one thing i hate. When they put the toilet paper roll behind you instead of beside you. I can thankfully say Vibe has the toilet paper right beside you.
There were towels and bathmats but no face washers. If you like a face washer, and i know my wife does, bring one from home.
Now the nitty gritty. I’m being picky here because i know some people are picky. If you look close enough there were some small marks on the walls and a few spots where paint had chipped off. Not an issue for us but it might be for some.
Accessibility at Vibe Hotel Docklands
The entry to the hotel has no steps. Automatic doors and ramp access into the check in lobby. Good start.
There’s a small step into the bathroom which you could easily navigate and it’s wide enough to fit a shower chair. The one thing to watch is the towel rack sits a bit close to the shower, so if you need a wheelchair in there it might get in the way.
The pool area has flat decking all the way around with both a ladder and a shallow step down into the water, which may suit people with accessibility issues. Overall the accessibility here is really good.
Facilities at Vibe Hotel Docklands
For anyone who likes to work out there’s a gym on the 7th floor with weights, walking machines and rowing machines. It’s not very big but it’s certainly enough if you’re into the fitness lifestyle.
Also on the 7th floor is the pool area with views out over the Bolte Bridge and the bay. There are cabanas, tables and chairs if spending the day by the pool is your thing. I’ve got to say this pool area looks quite stunning. If it was summer I would certainly spend some time up here. There’s also a spa that looked inviting. I could see Bec and i sitting in there with a couple of cocktails.
The Sky Function room is on the same floor. When there’s nothing booked it’s an open area where you can hang out, which is handy for families. There’s a ping pong table, a foosball table and an old style arcade machine where you can play games like Donkey Kong.
There’s a bar and seating area just off the main check in area. Happy hour runs every day from 4 til 6 with $10 house wines and anything on tap. Bec grabbed a sweet white wine while i had an alcoholic ginger beer.
I’m pretty impressed with the facilities considering what we paid. $200 a night with free parking and breakfast included. For that price in Melbourne you can’t really go wrong.
Breakfast at Vibe Hotel Docklands
We had breakfast included with our stay. For those that follow us you’d know Bec loves a good hotel breakfast. It’s her perfect way to start the day and one of the reasons we pick hotels over Airbnb most of the time.
The breakfast at Vibe was ok. Nothing outstanding or memorable. The best way to describe it is if you’ve had breakfast at a Holiday Inn Express or a Premier Inn overseas, it’s similar.
It’s a basic setup with 4 or 5 hot stations. Scrambled eggs, bacon, baked beans, mushrooms, that type of thing. Like an English breakfast. There were bread and pastry choices along with fruit, cheese and cold meats. Coffee, tea, juice and cereal rounded it off.
You can ask for eggs done different ways. Fried, boiled or poached. Bec likes a boiled egg to start the day and you’ve just got to track down a staff member to request them. Like i said, nothing special, but a good all round breakfast with a little bit for everyone.
Getting to the Melbourne CBD from Docklands
The Melbourne free tram zone has a stop 100 metres from the front door of the Vibe Hotel. It’s called the Waterfront City / Docklands Drive stop. Three different trams service it regularly and it’s free.
Route 70 takes in Flinders Street and the Melbourne Sports Precinct including the MCG and the National Tennis Centre. It connects Waterfront City all the way out to Wattle Park in Melbourne’s east.
Route 86 travels via Bourke Street, Spencer Street and La Trobe Street. It connects Waterfront City Docklands to the northern suburbs up to Bundoora RMIT.
Route 35 (City Circle) is the free tourist tram that loops around the edge of the Melbourne CBD via Flinders Street and La Trobe Street.
Parking at Vibe Hotel Docklands
We had free parking included in our stay because we’re Genius members with Booking.com. There are a few parking options close by with the best being Docklands West Car Park. You can park there for 48 hours for $36. That’s way cheaper than parking at a Melbourne CBD hotel and on par with what we pay staying out in Glen Waverley. The car park is 450 metres from the Vibe Hotel.
Do not book parking through the hotel. They charge $32 a night for the same Docklands West Car Park you can use yourself for $36 across 48 hours. Just roll in, take your ticket and pay at the machine before you leave.
What is around Vibe Hotel Docklands
With The District Docklands straight across the road you have plenty of food options. Korean, Chinese and Greek. If you want something fast there’s KFC, Subway, Mary Brown’s, Pancake Parlour, Nando’s and more.
We love a drink so we headed to Urban Alley Brewery, a local microbrewery where i can highly recommend the Baltic Porter. Bec loved the hard lemonade.
For entertainment there’s a cinema complex and a few escape rooms, not to mention ArtVo the 3D gallery and an upside down house.
Is Docklands a good area to stay in Melbourne?
Let’s be honest. Docklands was built to be the next big neighbourhood in the CBD area of Melbourne. If success is measured by how busy the area is then it’s been a dismal failure.
There aren’t a lot of people around. For some, like us, that’s not a bad thing at all. You get fewer people, less traffic, cheaper prices and good options for food, drink, entertainment and transport. For couples travelling after 50 who don’t need to be in the middle of the action, that makes Docklands an ideal base for a weekend in Melbourne. There’s a decent range of hotels in Docklands across most budgets.
Is Vibe Hotel Docklands worth it?
We paid $200 a night for a two night stay but i’ve seen it as low as $140 during the week. We think $200 is relatively cheap for a hotel of this standard on a weekend in Melbourne.
The big question we always ask ourselves is would we stay here again. The answer is definitely yes. Good location, close to shopping, restaurants and public transport. The nightly rate was good and the parking was cheap by Melbourne standards. The area as a whole is not busy and that’s something Bec and I like.
As an older travel couple in our 40s and 50s we don’t need to be in the centre of the action. We just need a nice room with access to transport and food. Vibe Docklands ticks all those boxes. Comfortable, accessible and good value for money, which is all you can ask these days in a city as expensive as Melbourne.
