Small country, big impression

Singapore is the most western country in Asia. It is impossibly clean, extraordinarily efficient and packed with more to see, eat and do than most countries ten times its size. As a travel couple we found Singapore to be one of the easiest cities in Asia to navigate — and one of the most expensive.

Yes, it is expensive by Southeast Asian standards. But Singapore rewards those who dig beneath the surface. The hawker centres such as the Tekka Centre and the Chinatown Complex alone make the trip worthwhile — this is world-class street food served. Beyond the food, the diversity of neighbourhoods — Chinatown, Little India, Kampong Glam, the colonial district — means every hour of exploring turns up something worth seeing. For couples travelling after 40 who want comfort, safety and quality attractions – Singapore deserves a spot on your list.

The Hawker Centres
Singapore’s hawker centres are a UNESCO-recognised cultural institution — and rightly so. Maxwell Food Centre, Lau Pa Sat, Old Airport Road — each one has affordable, extraordinary food from across Chinese, Malay and Indian culinary traditions.
🏙️
The Neighbourhoods
Chinatown, Little India, Kampong Glam and the Colonial District each have their own distinct character, food, architecture and atmosphere. You can walk between completely different worlds in the space of a few hundred metres — it never gets old.
🚇
Ease of Travel
Singapore’s MRT is one of the best metro systems in the world — clean, punctual, affordable and air-conditioned. Getting around as a couple couldn’t be easier. English is universal, signage is everywhere and the city is remarkably safe at all hours.
🛂
Visa
Most nationalities can enter Singapore visa-free for 30 to 90 days depending on your passport. Check the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority for the latest requirements before you travel.
💵
Money
Singapore is expensive compared to the rest of Southeast Asia — budget accordingly. That said, hawker centres keep food costs very reasonable. Cards are accepted almost everywhere. ATMs are plentiful and reliable throughout the city.
📱
Connectivity
Singapore has excellent mobile coverage across the entire island. Local SIM cards from Singtel, StarHub or M1 are available at Changi Airport. Alternatively, a Saily eSIM gives you instant connectivity before you even land.
🚇
Getting Around
The MRT metro is the best way to get around — fast, cheap and covers virtually the whole island. Grab is widely used for rideshare. Book flights through Trip.com. Changi Airport is consistently ranked the best airport in the world.
🌤️
Best Time to Visit
Singapore is hot and humid year-round sitting just 1° north of the equator. February to April tends to be the driest period. Rain can come at any time — usually as short, heavy afternoon downpours rather than all-day rain. Pack light, breathable clothing regardless of when you visit.
💡
Local Tips
Singapore has strict laws — no chewing gum, no littering, no smoking in most public areas. These are enforced. English is the primary language of business and daily life making it one of the most accessible cities in Asia. Tipping is not expected or customary.
