One of Asia’s most underrated destinations

Malaysia is a country that often gets overlooked in favour of its neighbours, but for a travel couple it offers a really good mix of cultures, cities, beaches, Islands and food that is genuinely hard to beat. From the chaotic streets of Kuala Lumpur to the colonial charm of Melaka, the street food of Penang and the island paradise of Langkawi — Malaysia has something for almost every kind of traveller.

What makes Malaysia stand out for couples travelling after 40 is the sheer value for money combined with genuine warmth from the people. It is also remarkably easy to get around, English is widely spoken, and the food scene — a collision of Malay, Chinese and Indian cuisines — is one of the best in the world. If you haven’t put Malaysia on your list, it deserves to be there.

The Food
Penang has a reputation one of the best foodie locations in Asia — and we agree. From char kway teow to nasi kandar, the Little India neighborhood alone is worth the trip. Kuala Lumpur is no slouch either, with endless options across every cuisine and price point.
🏝️
Langkawi
A duty-free island with beautiful beaches, jungle-covered hills and a relaxed pace that’s perfect for couples. Less crowded than Bali and far more affordable than Thailand’s islands — Langkawi is one of Southeast Asia’s great hidden gems.
🏛️
History & Culture
Melaka’s UNESCO-listed old town is a living record of Portuguese, Dutch and British colonial history, while old meets new in Kuala Lumpur at The Batu Caves and Merdeka 118. From beaches to Mosques, from shopping centres to museums Malaysia has something for all travel couples.
🛂
Visa
Most nationalities can enter Malaysia visa-free for up to 90 days. Check the latest entry requirements at Immigration Malaysia before you travel as policies do change.
💵
Money
The Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) makes Malaysia excellent value for couples. ATMs are widely available in cities and tourist areas. Credit cards are accepted at most hotels and restaurants, but carry cash for hawker centres and markets where you’ll eat the best meals.
📱
Connectivity
Local SIM cards from Maxis, Celcom or Digi are cheap and widely available at airports and convenience stores. Alternatively, grab a Saily eSIM before you leave home for instant connectivity on arrival.
🚌
Getting Around
Kuala Lumpur has an excellent metro system. Between cities, comfortable express buses and trains connect most destinations. Book flights and trains through Trip.com. Grab is the go-to rideshare app across the country.
🌤️
Best Time to Visit
Malaysia is a year-round destination but the west coast (Penang, Langkawi, KL) is best from March to October when rainfall is lower. The east coast has the opposite pattern — avoid November to February. Borneo has its own distinct seasons.
💡
Local Tips
Malaysia is a Muslim-majority country — dress modestly when visiting mosques and in more conservative areas. Tipping is not expected but appreciated. English is widely spoken making it one of the easiest countries in Asia to navigate as a couple.
